The four stories in this anthology were somewhat all over the place for me.

Sharon Shinn's story was not what I was expecting when I read "a retelling of the Cinderalla myth". If I hadn't known, I never would have known. It's also not Shinn's usual style, at least from what I expected from her Twelve Houses series. It was a decent story, but I wasn't as impressed with it as I thought I would have been. If you haven't read Shinn before, it's a decent introduction to her style, but it's not as good as her other works.

Rebecca York's story improved on a second reading. It still feels extremely contrived and clunky overall, but at least the worldbuilding was well-done and original. I somewhat dislike the unnecessarily complicated names that she throws in, but it does add a fair bit of flavor. She gets points for originality if not the best writing.

Carol Berg's story stands out as clearly the best. It felt much longer than the other three, and I haven't really spent the effort to figure out if it is. The story takes place in the same universe as some of her novels, so I had some background when reading it. However, I think that it would be accessible to a reader without that background knowledge. Berg's romance was the most believable of the four stories. She also managed to do as much worldbuilding as York, while keeping the quality of her writing high.

Jean Johnson finishes off with a dull and utterly unoriginal tale. Both the plot and the romance were contrived, and I groaned aloud when I read her cliched ending to the already cliched story. You can safely skip this without losing anything. It doesn't belong in the same category as these other stories, it belongs in the trashy romance section.

For those seeking the limelight, a must read. Be prepared for all the pitfalls that come along with the ride to fame. Inspirational autobiography of dedication and determination. May our young people keep the thought before them, that nothing comes without full commitment. Mr. Johnson has seen the highs and lows of life. There is strength in the testimony of others.
