This is a 2-disc, DVD collection that covers
the years of World War II. Now, while I'm NOT
old enough to REMEMBER WWII, I w-a-s born af-
ter it, in 1949. My dad met my mother-- while
stationed in Blitzkrieged England. This collec-
tion of short subjects carried me, safely, to
THOSE years prior to MY American birth.
One of the discs has 25 short subjects, the
other, 14, which you'll MOST appreciate if you
were in the ARMY or NAVY-- any time, or place--
however, remember the AIR FORCE wasn't actually
"born" till about the time I was. The Marines
used to-- in my day-- fall under the Department
of the Navy, while the Coast Guard was in the
Department of Transportation. They're ALL shown
here-- despite the title. Looks like a good buy.
CHILDREN helped in WWII! They made war-equipment!
There's several references to how "elderly" (and
even four-foot-tall men) served our country in the
Domestic Coast Guard in the named capacity.
I work in Schweinfurt, Germany [part-time], so
my ears perked up when bombing Schwein-furt was
mentioned in the program. I started to wence when
a black [segregated] Navy Construction Battalion
(Seabies) flashed on the screen. A black man was
grading with a 'dozer, another black surveyed. Sur-
prisingly for the time, there was NO mention of their
color. What flabergasted me-- sincerely-- was the
lack of ANY mention of ANY-one's race in the entire
series, except, of course [remember Pearl Harbor] the
Japanese's 3-letter abbreviation, and the hate of
the Germans... with an occasional remark about the
Italian dictator.
