![]() Liza's at the Palace $19.98 LIZA'S AT THE PALACE is truly a unique experience. Picture the combination of a full length concert presented in the controlled atmosphere of a studio and that is what you get with LIZA'S AT THE PALACE. I have followed Liza's career for many years--its ups and its downs--and this is truly an "up" time for her. Her voice is the best on a recording that I have heard for some time; her phrasing meticulous; and her dramatization riveting. You feel that you are alone in the Palace watching her perform on the stage with a full peiece orchestra solely for you. I have worn out "repeat" on her rendition of "My Own Best Friend." If you are a Liza fan, you need this recording; if you are not, buy it and you wll be. On a world tour including Australia, more and more people are coming to realize that the Judy genes cannot say die. I loved it!!! ![]() Liza with a 'Z' - Concert for Television (Collector's Edition) $29.99 "Liza with a z" is one of the best performances by anyone that i've ever seen. I was a fan of Liza's mother Judy Garland long before I became very interested in Liza. When I would think of Liza I would think of her as the daughter of Judy and I had only a vague idea of who she really was. Seeing this changed all that and I became an immediate big Liza fan and then I gained respect for her as a truly fine performer in her own right. From start to finish she has an almost captivating presence on the stage and a strong connection with her audience. Even watching this old film on an old tv in my living room it can be seen even before the show begins that there is a certain excitment and energy in the air which I have come to find out is something characteristic of Liza's shows in general. Liza comes waltzing on to the stage looking grand decked out in white attire and her first song "Yes I Can" begins. Correct me if this not the actual title of the song. I dont know the titles of the songs as I taped this off of tv, so I am only guessing at what the titles are. The titles of the songs become quite irrevelant though when seen in light of the performance. I will not do a song by song review of each number but without exception every one of them is an absolute gem. Favorites from the show are all of them but in particular, "My Mammy" is very very good Liza's vocals on that song are like the sun shining down from the sky, also very very good is "Blackbird", in mentioning this song I feel it is important that I also give alot of credit to the background singers/dancers all of whom are great, they arent listed in the credits which is a bit of a shame. The choreography, costumes, and orchestration were all wonderful. Also wonderful in the show are the songs "I Gotcha", "Mabey this Time", "Cabaret", "Son of a Preacherman". I now undersand what all the fuss is about Liza now that I've bothered to sit down and really watch her, some people use the word legend when talking about Liza. I feel that after decades of giving dazzling performances on stage since the 60's, Liza like her mother became a legend of the stage. It is also important to note that Liza is a fine film actress also but I think she truly shines on the stage in front of an audience and she truly shines. I will close this review by saying that if you like music like this which is orchestrated and tells stories as many of the songs do then this is a wonderful film to get. For anyone who has seen one of Liza's movies and is more interested in what she is like on stage then this is a wonderful place to start. Thank You. ![]() Judy Garland Live at the London Palladium with Liza Minnelli $14.99 Probably the last great piece of work of Judy Garland's life caught on tape before her death, "Judy Garland...Live at the Palladium with Liza Minnelli" is a DVD everyone who loves music should own. Not only do you get two fabulous entertainer's together, but the music is ageless and enthralling. Recorded on November 16th, 1964 in London, England, the DVD features the mother/daughter duo of Judy and Liza and shows not only are they two of the greatest singers, but it shows the love they have for one another. Liza was only 18 when this was filmed, but she performs like a complete pro, while Judy shows she still has the pipes and the presence. Liza looks amazing with the black hair parted at the side, and I have to say I really like seeing her pre-"Cabaret" look. However, you can tell Judy has aged. She was only in her early forties, but obviously having her variety show on CBS cancelled just eight months before really took its toll on her. Nevertheless, she proves she's still the entertainer everyone loves. I love her wittiness and banter with Liza and the audience, and she especially loves it when the fans help her sing "Over the Rainbow". Watch Liza's expression as she watches her mother perform this song. There is absolute love in her eyes for her beloved "Mama". The DVD features songs with both Judy and Liza together, as well as solos. The best performance I think is the first number Judy does to open the concert, "Just Once in a Lifetime". It gives me chills whenever I watch this. Other great songs covered are "Just in Time", "Hello, Dolly', "The Man that Got Away", "San Francisco", and "The Music that Makes Me Dance". You get 12 full songs along with 2 great medleys. You will watch this over and over. The quality of the material looks aged as the producers didn't clean the original print, but once you get into the concert your eyes will be fixated on these two legendary performers. You will not be sorry you bought this DVD. ![]() Finest $18.98 Having collected Liza's music since the early 70's, this collection represents some of the best work she has ever done. It is clear why she rocketed to stardom. Her voice is clear, unique and genuine, and not the rehearsed "character" that she has become in recent years. She is at her best when she tells stories in song! |
