I'm going to reiterate what a previous reviewer stated and say I absoulutely love this movie. This isn't the end all or be all of high school reunion flicks but a gentle lampooning on the genre. To take it as some profound statement about going home again would do the film a disservice. The soundtrack here is impeccable. Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino, two of the top comediennes of the previous decade, have chemistry to burn. To boot you have Alan Cumming, one of the great British funnymen, as the object of Kudrow's affection. Irresistable is an understatement.

Hopeless Pictures is about a failed movie producer, his pathetic nephew who works for him, his main mistress, his current wife, another woman with very low self-esteem he's slept with and who also works for him, and various other characters, all of whom are tied together because they have the same psychologist.

It's a biting satire of Hollywood . . . but haven't we seen this before? A lot?

There are a few funny scenes here, to be sure. Most of these involve telephone conversations with the psychologist that reveal things about the characters they aren't admitting to each other or even themselves. But mostly I found the show too self-absorbed and unoriginal.

I also didn't see the point of the graphic sex scene. Aside from titilating some viewers, what did it exactly add? Nothing really. When South Park gets down and dirty, it does it to be funny. Here there's nothing funny about it. It's just dirty and pathetic.

So this show isn't terrible, and it isn't good. It's just "eh." Television could use more brilliant, and less "eh," and to do that it really has to step outside itself. As a real life producer might ask, "Have you got anything NEW?" New would be good.

If you're looking to be wowed again by a cartoon for television the way you were when you first saw The Simpsons or South Park, you're going to have to look further. This certainly isn't it.


I give it two stars because I think I might have almost laughed once or twice. I also winced a few times and found parts painful to watch, so two stars is really the most I can give it.

sadly this show only lasted one season. lisa kudrow steps out of the well received character of phoebe to star in and produce one of the most intelligent comedies ever. i can never get enough of following the life and times of valerie cherish.
