I saw the cover and thought "The Lump of Coal" looked offbeat and funny. The book was offbeat, but not in a funny way. Is this book supposed to be funny for kids or adults? Sadly, I think it misses the mark on both counts. It's too sophisticated for kids, but not sophisticated enough for adults. It had a very slow plot for a childrens' book, and Snicket's explaining every other word was annoying. He does the same thing in his Unfortunate Events Series. I was expecting a delightful tale and got a lesson in vocabulary instead. Mr. Helquist's illustrations were the few bright spots in the book.

this book only made me frustrated and disturbed. i guess it was the pt. of the baudelaire story but it left so many mysteries unsolved.like the secret of the sugar bowl and what really happened to the quagmires and what the underwater question mark was.
