A Short History of Western Legal Theory

This is a fabulous book. It begins with early concepts from ancient Greece, lays out the fundamental differences between "natural law" and "the law of the real world," then extends the history of legalistic ideas through the Roman epoc, middle ages, etc. The book identifies the bases of difference between the legal systems of the west and those of communist states, e.g., common law and code law vs. Marxist law. It fully describes the influence of Christianity on western legal thinking. There are "plots" and "sub-plots" in this book that are absolutely fascinating. Finally, it is deliciously written; for those who truely appreciate the english language.

Feminist and Queer Legal Theory

A groundbreaking new collection, "Feminist and Queer Legal Theory: Intimate Encounters, Uncomfortable Conversations" brings together major voices in feminist and queer theory to create a truly interdisciplinary dialogue that will define the terms of the debates between and within feminist and queer theoretical frameworks for the next decade. These debates primarily revolve around the multiple interrelated issues - such as gender, identity, intimacy, privacy, and sex harassment - that all extend from the emphasis given to gender on the one hand and sex and sexuality on the other. These two theories have much in common but also much that distinguishes them from one another, and that causes tension. Together and in relation to each other, the authors in this volume engage in a rigorous and sometimes contentious exploration of the legal, political, social and cultural implications of their distinct theoretical approaches to gender and sexuality.

The diversity and varying depth of legal theories and critical perspectives created a clear need for this book. Its compartmentalized structure and breadth of vision is deeply appreciated. Prospective readers can be assured that the various articles, written by well-respected leading scholars, are aimed at the introductory level. Their achievement is one of complete comprehensibility - no advanced degree required. The superior quality of the various articles in this most commendable work cannnot be understated.

(Paperback edition) The paper is of acceptable but lower grade quality. The text font is readable but left me with the impression that the publishing company used an old IBM Selectric typewriter.
