Mr.Nabokov junior did his father's reputation a disservice when he disobeyed the expressed instruction to destroy this collection of fragments from the construction site of an unfinished novel. Since I have read a lot of positive things about the son in his father's books and in biographies about the parents, I will not accuse him of milking the market, but I will believe that he really thought that this was his father's final master piece. Alas, it is not. It will not add anything valuable to his body of work.

The book may have been `finished' in the author's mind, but it certainly was incomplete on his cards. Selling these rudiments as an alleged master piece will fool few people. Inflating it to nearly 300 pages of thick heavy carton where most of the time one of 2 pages is empty and the text of the other page has lines which would easily fit a half page leads to the following calculation: instead of 300 pages, the book could be a slim pocket book of 75 pages. The `offer' to the reader of taking out the master's cards and re-arranging them according to ones own preferences is certainly original, but I am not sure I appreciate it.

Summarizing content is futile. We have some elements which are reminiscent of Nab's previous successes and obsessions. I can't see how he would have published the joke involving a Mr. Hubert Hubert, an aged version of the Lolita narrator, again at his mission of courting a woman to reach her daughter; here just an episode of several other superfluous ones. Or the lame joke about a madman called Dr.Freud.
Themes of the intended story include the dying process of a fat man (trying to find fun in the process by attempting 'auto-dissolution') and his love life with a skinny young woman. There is also some book writing going on. This is all sadly un-needed. I say this as a Nabovist (Nabokovian? Nabokophile?)

Slow, out of focus, I say out of focus because it was beyond soft focus. The story was just way too slow.

Many years ago, I had a friend recommend this film to see but never got around to seeing it. Eventually, found an old copy on videodisc and watched it on my old RCA videodisc player. When it came out on DVD, I waited for a while since I had the old copy. Why did I wait?! The DVD restoration is crisp and clear with excellent video and sound. If you love scary/thrillers and Faye Dunaway, I highly recommend this movie. Tommy Lee Jones does a great job too!!
