![]() When the Game Was Ours $26.00 Bird and Magic were rivals throughout their career. Their mutual respect and competition between them was something to behold. The classic Celtic-Laker playoffs were great. This books sheds some good insight into their relationship and some of the behind the scenes issues that developed. A good read! It combined the decline and stagnation of the city of Boston thanks to forced busing with that of the Boston Celtics. The books also maps the return to glory of each thanks to the fact that competent leaders emerged and focused on excellence rather than their own selfish agendas. Michael Connolly does a great service to his work by showing these two environments as occurring on parallel tracks but not always related to each other. He is also smart enough not to present the Celtics as a panache for what ailed the city but still shows the Celtics did have a positive impact. Connolly also presents the warts and all overview of how the busing issue was totally mismanaged by politicians who mortgaged the lives and educations of students for their own narrow minded ends. Connolly does a very good job of making it clear who was at fault without assigning blame. As is often said, he lets the facts speak for themselves. This is a very interesting history of a critical period and well worth reading. ![]() Drive: The Story of My Life $7.99 Book outlines apparently the life as Larry Bird as written by him. Pretty basic stuff here. A good read if you were a Bird fan back in the past. Of course I emmulated my game after him while playing in two leagues as a teenager, now don't care much about basketball. So for me, it was somewhat of an enjoyable read. Didn't take long went right through it. Some interesting things about him was that his dad killed himself, and Bird's deep attitude about not being superficial I found especially interesting. However, he tries not to make any enemies here and there's nothing to controversial to be found. Interesting to see how someone of his stature kept his head together. ![]() Larry Bird: An Indiana Legend $29.95 Rookie of the Year. World Champion. All-Star. MVP. Coach of the Year.
