![]() Sullivan's Travels - Criterion Collection $39.95 John L. Lloyd 'Sully' Sullivan (Joel McCrea) a successful comedy movie producer gets it in his mind that comedy is shallow and want s to produce a ""O Brother, Where Art Thou?" to soothe his social conscience and make a few bucks on the side. On his first foray into the world of the forgotten man he barely escapes captivity and encounters The Girl (Veronica Lake). In his attempt to repay her kindness Sully's sojourn is foiled. Will he complete his plan and/or will he find what he is really looking for? Aside from the fun of watching the interaction between the different characters we may come away with an insight that can apply to today. I Married a Witch ~ Veronica Lake ![]() Lady Eve [VHS] $14.98 Preston Sturges dominated cinema comedy in the early 1940s and finished off the competition with several films that took the genre to a new place others have tried to reach, rarely successfully, ever since. His ability to combine slapstick with some of the subtlest eye gags and dialogue wit is breathtaking in this example of his work. He leads and deceives the audience with such a sure touch - only the director is more conniving than the con-men and con-women who dominate the story. Stanwyck is fabulous - sexy, yes, as others have noted (with expressed surprise). Fonda is the perfect prat (not so unsuspecting as to be vacuous). The supporting cast features many of the great character actors of the time. Coburn as the elder card shark delivers the deadpan stuff with his usual perfect pitch. This is a genuine laugh-out-loud comedy (the scene with the horse is a hoot) - but, if you aren't in tears from the humour (at a couple of points Fonda is unable to suppress a smile), you will marvel observing the amazing skill of the ringmaster. For any serious collection. ![]() Barbara Stanwyck 6 Disc Box Set ( Double Indemnity / The Bitter Tea of General Yen / The Miracle Woman / The Lady Eve / All I Desire / Golden Boy ) [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.2 Import - Great Britain ] $39.37 Great Britain released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: it WILL NOT play on standard US DVD player. Billy Wilder, 1944):; Director Billy Wilder and writer Raymond Chandler ('The Big Sleep') adapted James M. Cain's hard-boiled novel into this wildly thrilling story of insurance man Walter Neff (Fred MacMurray), who schemes the perfect murder with the beautiful dame Phyllis Dietrichson (Barbara Stanwyck): kill Dietrichson's husband and make off with the insurance money. But, of course, in these plots things never quite go as planned and Barton Keyes (Edward G. Robinson) is the wily insurance investigator who has a feeling that not all is as it seems...; ; The Lady Eve (Dir. Preston Sturges, 1941):; Under Sturges's typically antic microscope, the collision between the gold-digging Harrington and the very rich, very hapless brewery-heir-turned-herpetologist Charles Pike (a wonderfully callow, guileless Henry Fonda) yields ample opportunity for the writer-director to skewer issues of class and sex; as always, Sturges is bold in pushing the censors' envelope, capturing a palpable erotic heat between the canny Jean and the literally feverish Charlie, who, after a year up the Amazon, is instantly smitten by the mere sight of her shapely ankles (in hindsight, a precursor to her subsequent effect in 'Double Indemnity').; ; The Bitter Tea Of General Yen (Dir. Frank Capra, 1933):; Caught in a Chinese rebellion, newly-arrived American Megan Davis (Stanwyck) is rescued by a cultured bandit, General Yen. When she realises she is being held captive she sets about undermining her captor. In time, however, she finds that it is not her confinement she must fight against - rather it is her growing attraction to the man...; ; Golden Boy (Dir. Rou |
