There is no point in trying to list all of the flaws in this adaptation of Austen's classic; I would be here all day! What possessed the makers of this film to cast Keira Knightly as Elizabeth Bennet, or Donald Sutherland as her father? Knightly's Lizzy is a giggling and immature airhead, with no depth of character whatsoever. The language and behaviour of the time is ignored, the dialogue is very clumsy, and the costumes and general appearance of the characters are shabby. Macfadyen's Darcy looked as bored as I was. Did the scriptwriters read the book before setting about writing the script? Was any historical research done? I doubt both. There isn't a scene in the entire film that I can say a good thing about. So badly done. So disappointing.

"Twaddle", according to dictionary.com, is defined as "trivial, feeble, silly, or tedious talk or writing." Therefore, I think it the perfect word to describe this disgrace of a book. This book does not stand on its own; you must know Jane Austen's Emma well to feel comfortable with the story line. The premise of its being a "diary" is nothing short of ludicrous. Can you imagine Mr. Knightley taking the time to write out conversations full of trivial things like like Emma saying "I am so pleased to see you. We were just saying, were we not, Papa, that we hoped Mr. Knightley would look in." If you want to write out inane dialogue like that, don't make it a diary. Mr. Knightley is a very busy man running a large estate with many tenants and deeply involved in Parish business, yet he is sitting down at night to write out details in his diary that he sat next to Miss Taylor. It is ridiculous to think of. The dialogue is terrible (except the passages copied out from Jane Austen), and what is up with the use of the word "whilst"? Grange uses it as though it is representative of the way they talked at that period; yet I found it so awkward and excessive that I finally searched all of Jane Austen's texts at Pemberley.com and found it used only four times, and that in Pride & Prejudice. But beyond that admittedly focused complaint, the language really was terrible and awkward. Can you imagine Mr. Knightley saying that Emma is the only woman for him? Well you don't need to imagine it, he says it twice. Don't ask how many times he laments "my Emma".

I think most disturbing to me, however, was the fact that Mr. Knightley referred over and over to Emma as a girl, and also to Harriet as Emma's "little" friend. Given the age difference between Mr. Knightley and Emma, it is unseemly for him to think of her that way. One would hope that Mr. Knightley is in love with a woman, not a girl. This book was really unsatisfactory on every level; it didn't even feel like I was taking a turn with the original characters again.
