John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band
John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band

$17.98
For my money, John Lennon's best solo album is Plastic Ono Band. It is so raw and emotional that you do feel a little guilty listening to it. This was a man dealing with the break up of the band he founded. In addition, Lennon was finally coming to terms with the death of his mother Julia and his father's abandonment of him when he was, I believe, three years old. I absolutely love the proto-punk sounds of Well Well Well and I Found Out. The lyrics are cathartic and amazingly open. Lennon strips belief down to himself (and Yoko). He wants to feel his pain and not mask it with substances or belief systems. What an album ! It's hard to imagine a current artist baring his or her soul like this. Of note is that, through all of the pain, he still celebrates Love. I love Imagine as well, but this is my favorite Lennon solo album because of the vulnerability and openness here. The production is also less pronounced and lets the listener feel the music.

Reading John Lennon biographies, I feel this is the kind of music that he enjoyed listening to. This is some of the best "Rock and Roll" that I've heard him or anyone, for that matter, play. This album is f****** great!

I don't usually read or listen to abridged versions of any book, but I got one from the library because I was in a hurry and it looked SO interesting. I searched and searched the cover to see if it said "abridged," but misleadingly it did not. All it said was chapter selections were "approved by the author."

Ugh. It is painfully obvious in places where chapters were deleted. For instance, it skips straight from he and Yoko having become 'friends' of a sort but now living in separate countries. Next chapter, he's been married to her for a while! WTF???

Now I have to read the book. Sigh. Skip the audio version.
Content wise though, I am enjoying it quite a bit.
