![]() New York Yankees: An Interactive Guide to the World of Sports (Sports by the Numbers) $16.95 First, I hate the Steinbrenner era Yankees, so my review might be biased. However, there are few baseball fans who take the game as seriously as I do, having played, coached, and umpired for the past 40 years. As a coach, I was a stat freak, tracking every facet of the game in an effort to find ways to win. But seriously, guys, how many wild pitches, sac flies, double plays, etc. that an individual player threw/hit in a given season is BORING. By The Numbers - give us relevant stats instead of fluff for the numbers that really have no meaning. Uniform numbers - a piece of history, especially for the Yanks. Give us more back stories that provide insight into the players and coaches who made up the teams - I had tears in my eyes as I read the Thurmon Munson story. But don't throw out irrelevant stats for the purpose of covering every number from 1 to 1000. Numbers don't lie - but they can be deceiving. The book is a great concept if you scan and skip the fluff. Stories are very insightful, and this book is a great read for Yankees fans. If you are a Red Sox fan, it makes good kindling (read the short stories that begin each set of numbers first though - there is great insight there!). ![]() JOE TORRE RUDY GIULIANI MARK WAHLBERG JOE PESCI GOLF DIGEST DECEMBER 2004! $6.99 DECEMBER 2004 ISSUE OF GOLF DIGEST. THIS IS THE BUDDIES ISSUE, AND THE COVER FEATURES JOE TORRE, RUDY GIULIANI, MARK WAHLBURG, AND JOE PESCI. ![]() Chasing the Dream: My Lifelong Journey to the World Series $7.99 Unlike most of you reviewing I grew up as a southern girl and fell in love with the New York Yankees in the late fifties. I too think Torre has been one of their best managers although there have been others. The book was too much about Torre himself and not enough about my team. A little too much ego involved but would have to have it to be a Yankee manager or probably even a player. I have, over the years, read much about my team, and would not rate this as one of the best nor the worst. Just hope we win this year. ![]() Joe Torre's Ground Rules for Winners: 12 Keys to Managing Team Players, Tough Bosses, Setbacks, and Success $19.95 Joe Torre shows in "Ground Rules for Winners" how intelligent and passionate he is as a manager, father, and as a former player. His insight into his managerial strategies and rules makes for an entertaining and thought-provoking read. His ground rules for success make sense for the average fan, or the the passionate fan of baseball. He successfully weaves anecdotes from his days a player and as a manager for the Yankees into his advice to lend support for his views. I would have liked to have seen more examples from his previous managing stints with the Mets, Braves, and Cardinals, but his primary focus was his success as a manager with the Yankees. A thoroughly enjoyed this book for its ability to mesh stories and experiences from baseball into strategies for business and life. A nice effort from Joe Torre. |
