![]() India: In Word and Image $60.00 This book was given to a family who plan to visit India. They were so excited to receive it--said it was a wonderful "window" to what they expect to see in India. Beautiful pictures and articles. A definite display book in your home. And I also must mention that the price is the best that I found on the Internet! ![]() The Rough Guide to India, 7th Edition $29.99 Overall it's a very good guide with plenty of useful information for your first time in the country, but at the same time it's so focused on the point of view of the tourist that you probably will have a skewed perception of your experience if you focus only on the suggestions given. One example of this is the "recommended reading" section, where you will find very few books of indian authors. One huge mistake of the book, easily avoided if some attention to indian authors and researchers was exercised, is that it reproduces an academic myth: there was no "Arian Invasion" in India's ancient history, that was a theory produced when India was at England's mercy, in an attempt to feed to the population an altered view of the indian culture, one more close to their purposes: portraying the "Arian people" (white, powerful conquerors) as the main source of the sanskrit culture, one essencial to all the later development in the subcontinent. Recent works of indian historians are being very succesful to dismiss these fabrications. ![]() India (Lonely Planet Country Guide) $29.99 This book was a big help in planning our backpack trip to India. Information was as current as I thought it could have been. I too, like other readers, took the book apart to carry only the parts we needed on this trip. ![]() In Spite of the Gods: The Rise of Modern India $15.95 Couple of disclaimers first. I have spent three fourth of my life in India and rest outside learning about other cultures. I met a wonderful American couple on the plane on my way to India and they recommended the book as a true window to India. I read the book and frankly felt very sorry for the couple and India alike because this book is like "an elementary school essay that claims to be written by an expert". The book is really short on the facts and shockingly full of opinions. I don't recommend that you do not read the book but if you indeed decide on reading the book, please keep in mind that you are reading a medley of fiction, fantasy, opinion with some facts and truth sprinkled on it. To give you an example IN SPITE of having an Indian for a wife Mr. Luce can't get even THE GODS and their function in India mythology right. The best way to describe this book - as "authentic" as ethnic food at an airport, or an "authentic" cultural experience at a tourist trap. |
