2009 two CD set that collects, chronologically, one of the best runs of any '60s group, Soul or otherwise. Many use the word genius with a wild abandon, yet surely if there is one who deserves to be labeled as such, and who rarely is, it is Curtis Mayfield, a unique man in music. Mayfield was gifted with the pipes of an angel and took the rafter-raising spirit of the church, with its uplifting and hopeful message, and combined it with an indelible songwriting craft to create sublime spiritual Soul music that carried his sermons of civil rights and equality to the masses. Listening to his group, The Impressions, on this selection is a truly spiritual experience: it's like witnessing the birth of Soul over and over again. What a great Impression cd. I have alot of their music I just can't get enough of their music. My house was full of their music since I could remember. I knew the words to all their songs before I could write my name. "You've Been Cheating", me and my sister love dancing to. Excellent cd and I will continue on listening to this great music. Gypsy woman is my favorite song too.

The Very Best of the Impressions

The Impressions set the ground for lots of what the Temptations and many other soul groups would take to the top of pop music in the mid to late 60's. With strong gospel roots, Curtis Mayfield and crew deliver passionate songs and this disc provides a nice sample of their work with one great song missing, There is no excuse for a "Very Best" not to include their hit, "I'm So Proud" which has been widely covered by other talents.

For that reason, "The Impressions' Greatest Hits" (MCA) is a better collection of songs. If it is still available. This Rhino set is a better remaster, though the MCA release is acceptable. The booklet is a plus with lots of background on the band.

Regardless, take one CD or the other, if you love sweet soul music, the Impressions are a must in your collection.

I give this CD four stars only because "I'm So Proud" has been excluded. It's one of my favorite Impressions' tunes.
