As a child we went to Hawaii every year for our family vacation. This book took me right back to the Islands!
I personally loved the atitude portrayed in this book. Despite all of the bad, good was still had and seen through all. I truly enjoyed this book! This was one of our Book Club selections and we all enjoyed it! It is long but a very quick read! Highly recommend it!!! I am asking for Honolulu for Christmas!

The book was a good read, but it really dragged at times, as it seems he needed to fit his plot in with the historical context. Also, I'm not really sure his portrayal of a Korean woman was as authentic as it could be. He did a good job, but it certainly would have been better written by, well, a Korean woman. Still, I applaud Brennert and the book because it was a nice read, despite some pangs of 'not quite feeling it' areas. I still haven't forgotten one of the many subplots, the lynching of a Hawaiian boy, and for that story alone I give the book 4 stars. It's good, but not great. Worth reading if you get it at a good price.

The guide was great if all you had was a short time. All it lists are the top ten in any area and since I had more time (1-1/2 weeks), there is so much to see and do in Oahu that I needed another guide book. For example it listed the top ten restaurants which are the most expensive. I like the less expensive restaurants (termed mediocre in Frommer's). Additionally in the airport there are a dozen free guide books in racks which seem to have everything listed in this book.
