The Power of the Dharma: An Introduction to Hinduism and Vedic Culture
The Power of the Dharma: An Introduction to Hinduism and Vedic Culture

Bought this after reading many reviews. Seems some have issues about what is lacking in here, or not in-depth or complete enough. I went ahead and chose this book anyway, as it was titled as an "Introduction", after my first visit to the Vedic Temple here. This book served my needs totally. I did not want right now to have a full comprehensive book, simply one that would explain many of the aspects of this, and an explantation of the celebrations and deities. This makes it easy to understand, clear, and not too much information as to lose you starting out. If this is your intent, buy the book.

I was always intrigued to read the Gita from the first page to the last. I tried reading it online and I was never able to get through the first few pages. Upon the recommendation of a dear friend of mine, I got hold of Eknath Easwaran's translation of the Bhagavad Gita and all I can say is that the reading was a profound spiritual experience!

I highly recommend Easwaran's series (which includes the Upanishads and the Dhammapada) for a fascinating journey in to the heart of Eastern Philosophy and Religions. Not only are the translations so very beautiful and easy to read, each chapter has a few pages of introduction to help create the contextual setting of the passages to follow as well as Easwaran has a lengthy introduction (anywhere from 60 to 100 pages!) on the scripture you are about to read!

Brilliant! Also recommended are Easwaran's The Upanishads and The Dhammapada.

This is, indeed, an excellent introduction to Sanathana Dharma. It is written from an Advaita Vedanta standpoint, which stands to reason as its author is an Advaitin. I also am an Advaitin Hindu, so this was not a problem for me. Most books written nowadays as introductions to Hinduism, are, in fact, written from the Advaita viewpoint. This book covers a lot of the basics. It could have used some more details, such as the section on Yantras. But, overall, a good, solid introduction.

Hinduism is a philosophy. It is therefore a big or small as persons mind. Hinduism originated on the Indian subcontinent and it is one of the most mysterious and ancient faiths in the world. Having two million Gods, people choose the God to worship which they feel will protect them and help guide them through their everyday life. In Hinduism every God from every religion is welcome. To a Hindu to worship any God cannot hurt, it may even help.
Considered to be the oldest religion in the world, Hinduism has no single founder and is based on a number of religious texts developed over many centuries that contain spiritual insights and practical guidelines for religious life.
Today across the world more and more people are getting fascinated by Hinduism.
Come, take a journey into the world s third largest religion and you may find in it something that will touch your heart. It can be something that you have been following for years even though you may not be Hindu. This is because Hinduism is not a religion per se. It is way of life!!
