The New York Times Page One: One Hundred Years of Headlines As Presented in the New York Times
The New York Times Page One: One Hundred Years of Headlines As Presented in the New York Times

$24.99
These are the headlines that made the news. Often three lines, set in Italics Times, page one headlines of the "New York Times" defined American news for years. The internet, and national papers have diminished this effect somewhat, but for most of the Twentieth Century, the NYT was the news. Because of their influence, they were not only the reporters, but the generators of our news. If they didn't report it, one might wonder if it really happened. This edition has no glorious essays explaining how wonderful people were in 1955, or how great the generation was in 1940. Instead, we get page one completed, unedited.Only the days which made big news made the cut, but each page of the book is a complete front page. More than reproduced headlines, we can read the seondary and teriary stories, see the pictures, and know the weather. My birth year, 1966 apparently was only a big deal to me, as nothing newsworthy enough made this book.It is a hearty book, tall and wide. It is smaller than actual paper, and the body copy seems to have shrunk to about 6.5-7 pt. Printing methods were not as good in 1900, and you'll see the smudges in the ink as the plates wore throughout the day's printing. This makes intriguing history, but occasionally difficult reading. Newer pages are reproduced cleanly.I fully recommend "The New York Times Page One" as more than a curiosity. It would make an interesting book to provide school rooms to see the actual stories of the modern history they are studying. Anthony Trendl

Tabloid editors know that what sells their papers are headlines and pictures, the stories can fill up what space is left. The New York Post does a nice line in play-on-word headlines (the grammatical term is: paronomasia) set in big type. The book mostly reproduces the Post's front page with headlines and the stories continue elsewhere.

As the Post is a down-market tabloid the headlines are no-nonsense grabbers that are history by the next edition which is why I found so many of them rather superficial and that only pointed up several that I thought classics. The arrest of Panama dictator Noriega in 1990: CANNED PINEAPPLE (because of his pock-marked face), Mike Tyson fight: BITE OF THE CENTURY, Russel Crowe court case: CROWE FLIES.

What did intrigue me about the Post pages was the sloppy design. There seemed to be no tabloid style of locking the headlines, pictures and text in a tight page design. Odd because Murdoch's News Corporation who owns the paper also owns Britain's best selling tabloid the Sun, which daily produces great newspaper pages in the best tabloid style. The best selling German tabloid Bilt also has tightly designed pages, yet the Post, from what is shown in the book, rather ignores the tabloid look.

As a collector of great headlines, I've enjoyed these:
* U.S. ADMITS ATTACKS ON ALLIED WARSHIPS `MISTAKEN FOR HELICOPTERS'
* The war of the obese parsnip: will sugar cane take a beating
* Lone rower may miss Australia
* You Pretend to Drive, We Pretend to Get You There (about taxi drivers in Moscow)
And my favorite from the British Sunday Times in 1993 about the Inspector Morse TV series: Backward reels the mind in the dotty dash to give Morse a name

I would agree that Motley Fool has a stellar reputation. However, this newsletter is written purposefully as a teaser only. While there is a limited amount of information, and the articles are well written each article ends with a suggestion to add more extensive services for complete information.

I found it frustrating to read dead ended articles leaving me wanting the "true" information.
