Greatest Gospel Songs $9.99 This compilation collects 21 songs of "Faith & Inspiration" recorded by Perry Como. Unfortunately, attention to detail was not at the top of the list of priorities on this release. Many songs that were recorded in STEREO are released here in MONO. The mastering is of a good standard, but that is meaningless without a good source to match. There is at least one production error. The recording of "Holy God, We Praise Thy Name" is abridged. Verse 2, which begins with vocals by the St. Patrick's Cathedral Boys Choir on the original record release is missing here; very likely because this was a partial take before the choir made their part of the recording. The actual recording included lasts 1:29; however, the accompanying CD booklet contradicts this, stating the time as being 2:43. Also, Perry's 1968 RCA Victor Recording of "Ave Maria" is included; which was originally released within "The Perry Como Christmas Album" (from that same year). It would have been far more appropriate to include Perry's 1949 or 1959 recordings. Giving this CD a title of "Greatest Gospel Songs" is certainly a misleading title. The closest Mr. Como got to the Gospel Genre in the RCA Victor Recording studios was "He's Got The Whole World In His Hands"; included in this collection, but in MONO instead of STEREO. The recording originates from Perry's 2nd RCA Victor "Living Stereo" Album "When You Come To The End Of The Day". The best advice would be to look for the 1 or 2 CD Release of "Perry Como Sings Songs Of Faith And Inspiration" - both releases represent excellent value for money as well as a very good standard of sources and mastering.  Gospel's Greatest Hits $18.98 Several of the songs were Contemporary favorites from the legendary Light Records label from such artists as: Commissioned, Walter Hawkins, Winans & many others. A Well put together that should have been called "Gospel's Greatest Moments" or "Light's Greatest Gospel Collection". Having it being titled "Gospel's Greatest Hits" leads one to think and/or expect a whole lot more or a who's who list of artists, but never-the-less still a nice collection gathered up on Two Compact Discs!!! |
