![]() Barber's Adagio: Romantic Favorites for Strings $7.99 Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings is arguably one of the most beloved works in contemporary art music. There are many recordings of interpretations that are indeed spectacular but none will capture the emotional rawness that Bernstein so painfully accomplishes. The climax of the piece is so enthralling, I often find myself unable to exhale until the entrance of the low strings. Phenomenal recording. The Tallis Fantasia is interesting because I have found that in the hands of anybody else, this work comes off as subpar and weak. That could be interpreted that the peice is indeed a weak composition, but on this recording, you would never know it. In the hands of Lenny and the NY Phil strings, the Fantasia becomes nothing short of epic. Dynamic contrast, phrasing and intensity are utilized to their utmost effectiveness here. It is so immensely beautiful, that I am overwhelmed and am often moved to tears. The Fantasia on Greensleeves is also good but not nearly as good as other recordings I have come across before. The Tchaikovsky is perfect. Melancholic and contemplative, this work will quickly show just how well Bernstein understood the psychological perspective of Tchaikovsky's music. The Mahler is exquisite. ![]() Barber's Adagio and other Romantic Favorites for Strings [Expanded Edition] $7.99 Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings is arguably one of the most beloved works in contemporary art music.
