Everyman and The Second Shepherds' Play - Literary Touchstone Classic
Everyman and The Second Shepherds' Play - Literary Touchstone Classic

$3.99
This Prestwick House Literary Touchstone Classic includes a glossary and notes to help the modern reader understand both the vernacular of medieval times and the plays' biblical references. The messenger? Death. The message? God has summoned you to stand before Him and give a reckoning of your life. What do you do? The protagonist of this play, the shocked and distraught Everyman, faces this exact issue. But he is granted a day's grace to gather together anyone who will travel with him and help him at his judgment. As this moral allegory unfolds, however, poor Everyman learns that neither possessions, nor accomplishments, nor character traits will follow him to the grave. He must face his reckoning alone... Perhaps because Everyman's problem is our problem, this play, one of the earliest extant dramas in English, still provokes thought and discussion nearly 700 years after it was written.

The medieval morality play, which became popular in Europe during the 15th and 16th century, is a allegorical drama in which personal attributes are personified and the moral of choosing good over evil is generally conveyed. In this volume you will find one of the most famous examples of this genre in the play "Everyman" along with the following other plays: "The Deluge", "Abraham, Melchisedec, And Isaac", "The Wakefield Second Shepherds' Play", "The Coventry Nativity Play", "The Wakefield Miracle-Play Of The Crucifixion", "The Cornish Mystery-Play Of The Three Maries", "The Mystery Of Mary Magdalene And The Apostles", "The Wakefield Pageant Of The Harrowing Of Hell", and "God's Promises."

I bought this as a required textbook for a class. It is interesting; the introductions to each play really illuminate the material, and the footnotes provided resolve much of the confusion the language of some plays might give to the average reader. I would reccommend it as a textbook, as well as some interesting light reading for those interested in Medieval drama.
