![]() The Art and Science of Fencing $19.95 Nick Evangelista proves that he is a true master on the subject of fencing. Not only does he know the techniques and "little tricks" which may make an ordinary fencer an extraordinary fencer (he even has advice for a "Southpaw", like myself), he understands to enrich his text with background stories from fencing history, and anecdotes from his own career which make the book very readable and a rounded resource for anyone's fencing library. I could not put it down, once started. As it is always difficult to describe physical movements in words without losing the reader in the process, this, too is sometimes difficult to understand in Evangelista's book, and some passages need to be re-read over and over to make sense, and to allow the reader to form a mental picture of these intricate movements. I even went so far as to have his book open, next to me as I executed some of his described moves against a pell. His descriptions are true to form and complete in the manner of execution. Evangelista is a self-confessed traditionalist of my own liking. As with my own schooling in my professional career, he advocates old-fashioned, thorough training, starting with the basics and progressing only to the next level once the lower tasks have been mastered. In our world of instant gratification we are all too soon pressured to partake in "exciting" sparring bouts, which fencing schools need to encourage to keep their students interested (and paying). Evangelista states categorically that this will lead only to the formation of bad habits and sloppy techniques. I couldn't agree more! This is a great book for the beginning and intermediate fencer. ![]() Prince of Truth $6.93 So many great records this year like Shannon Wright - Honeybee Girls, Lisa Germano - Magic Neighbor, Joe Henry - Blood from Stars, Tiny Vipers - Life on Earth, to name a few, but Prince of Tuth is truly breathtaking, philosophical, enigmatic and at times very scary. And is for me album of the year, better than Hello, Voyager, it is more resolute and interconnected, I kinda thought Voyager (brilliant as it was), was almost fragmented, there seemed to be tracks that just fell into the record, personally for me though Carla's solo Evangelista is a little better and is one of the albums of the decade. ![]() Hello, Voyager $16.98 Hello, Voyager is not some clich of healing, yet there is a sense of satisfaction in the growl of this disjointed flotilla of mangled orchestration, string quintets, stark intimate songs and eidolic production. There is a moment a few minutes into the last track, a determined pile of percussion, trumpet, hushed feedback, shouts-turned-to-screams, background yelps and staccato guitar discharges, when you hear Carla Bozulich, say "ow!" (a drumming injury, I'm told). This is the same word going through your head as you peep from behind your hands during the previous eight tracks. It is not, however, the "ow" as in "ow, what a broken-hearted song" you felt on Bozulich and brilliant company's previous record, Evangelista (so much to communicate, still, they named the band after the album, perhaps). Now, the "ow" is the one you scream as you jump from the window of your drunk daddy's burning house. Yes, he is inside. ![]() Black Mylar Framed Art Print - Anisetta Evangelista - Monkey Driking Liquer 16x20" Poster $16.99 This is a low cost mylar framed poster.
