![]() Volcano $13.98 Like the most recent reviewer states, this album just gets better with repeated listenings. It still reeks of Edie's easy, breezy lyrics and crafty, delicious melodies, in the best way, but in more subtle, nuanced, cohesive ways. I just picked this album up again after a break, and continue to be entranced and surprised by its sexy, seductive sophistication. Its songs creep up on me...before I know it, a song I merely liked before up and confronts me with its smart charm. Like Meryl in Prada, Edie doesn't need to shout (vocally or in production) to make her points...she's still got the goods and trusts them. Most recently, I've also been taken by the cross-pollination of Manhattan singer-songwriter and Texas folkie energies. At once I feel like I'm in a cool, divey East Village hangout and...a cool, divey Austin venue. Great work, pure and simple. ![]() Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars $7.12 This is THE best Edie Brickell album. Just listen to the first 3 tracks and you'll be hooked. They're all just as good as the next. If you don't own an Edie album and are thinking about purchasing one, this is a really good place to start. Ghost of a Dog comes in a close second. ![]() The Heavy Circles $16.98 Not so much a review as a heads up, the reviews currently up here are referring to band called "Heavy Circles" of which Edie Brickell is apparently a member. The product featured here is from "Circle" a band from Finland, with a minimalist drone rock vibe. A 7" release, side a is little more in the rock vein than their standard fair, becoming a faced paced psychedelic jam as the song progresses. Side b is more of a sludgy, distorted groove. Well worth picking up if you like this sorta stuff. ![]() Shooting Rubberbands At The Stars $7.97 I used to love this album...at the time, everyone did. I worked at a Tower Records when it came out and everyone in the store played this on their "register shift"...over and over and over and over. Yes, it got old. About 5 years later, when I was doing my student teaching with high school kids, they were playing it too...Ok, so 5 years or so forward, and still holding its own. However, just the other day, I decided to play this album as I hadn't listened to it as a whole in years. The surprise for me? I couldn't make it past three songs. I found it grating and sophmoric. Don't get me wrong, I appreciated it at a time, and at the time, it was fun, refreshing and unique. However, 20 years have passed and I have discovered so much more musically over the years...so much more has happened musically. It may have been interesting to see how Edie progressed as a solo artist (however, I have seen her on a few late shows over the past few years, and...not so much). What did Edie do? Edie married Paul at her supposed "peak". I think that her creativity and potential may have matured and progressed over the years, but we all make choices in life. Unfortunately, I can now only give this album 3 stars for sentimentality. It served a purpose once, but it's no long standing masterpiece. |
