I never saw or heard of this movie before last week. I just rented it from Blockbuster because I like Dermot Mulroney and Amanda Peet. Since renting it last Sunday, I have seen it 5 times. This is now one of my all-time favorite love stories and I usually HATE movies that don't have the typical happy ending. This ending was not typical but very satisfying. I am now going to purchase it on Amazon because in my opinion, it is a must-have in any DVD collection. If, before seeing this movie, I had read a review that had told me to bring a box of kleenex, I would have avoided it at all costs but in this case, the tears are cathartic, not distressing. Really, Griffin and Phoenix makes you think and cry and hope and want to see it again and again.

Not your typical role for Jack nicholson, but one he nails. A wry, dark, funny slice of life from Midwestern Americana. Kudos to Kathy Bates for a superb supporting role and for personal bravery (nude scene) Hope Davis and Dermot Mulroney are good too. Not a fast paced film, but full of dry humor, ironies and stuff that makes you sigh and laugh. See it.

I loved this movie and when I finally saw that Amazon had the soundtrack, I couldn't wait to buy it. When it finally arrived I was very disappointed that it was really just the score to the movie. I really wanted the songs (with the singing) from the movie. It was very expensive for a CD and I wouldn't have purchased it if I had known.

I was happy to watch The Thing Called Love , River Phoenix's last completed film work. It was not his absolute best work as many of his other 12 feature films had been, but a few scenes in the film caught the beauty of River external and internal, he seemed to be struggling very hard to focus and his physical appearance had taken a drastic change , but those of us who followed his career could see in this film the actor was and had been the very best of our Generation X . His last role of James Wright allowed him to be a musician ,play and sing as was a great love for River, the human being. He was above all a human being living in this world , he left very early , left us with a small body of work for old and new followers to discover his beautiful talent from his 1st feature film Explorers to his last theatrical release Silent Tongue and everything River Phoenix had done in his lifetime. Discover or rediscover River Phoenix's work again , let's not focus so much on how he died, but how he lived and the film work he left for us to view, past, present, and future followers of his great work. He has been gone exactly 16 years today , October 31, 2009. Let us who enjoyed his completed work watch it again and remember the talented work of River Phoenix forever.
