![]() McFarlane MLB Series 22:Derek Jeter 4 - New York Yankees $19.99 The first action figure I picked up back in the 1980s was a Kenner Starting Lineup figure of Michael Cooper of the Los Angeles Lakers (we both went to the University of New Mexico--Go Lobos!). But except for the fact it had Cooper's number on the back of his little jersey you could not tell from looking at the head that it was Cooper and not Magic Johnson or James Worthy. It could have the head from any other NBA figure they were putting out. I did not purchase any other Kenner figures because (a) nobody else went to one of my alma maters and (b) the figures did not look like the people they were supposed to be. It was the folks at McFarlane Toys that stopped making sports figures a joke, and the Derek Jeter 4 figure from MLB Series 22 is one of the best they have put out to date. It is so hard to come out with a signature pose for these baseball figures, one that is so perfect that if you saw it in silhouette a baseball fan would instantly recognize who it is, and that is what we have here with this Jeter figure. The New York Yankees shortstop has just used his inside-out swing to punch a ball the other way. Those who have watched Jeter play have seen him do this time and time again and will instantly recognize the pose. The details on this figure include Jeter's Nike brand cleats, batting glove, and wrist band, along with the Benik custom neoprene medical supports he wears on his right wrist and left elbow. Jeter's black Louisville Slugger is already in place, so you do not have to worry about attaching (or losing) the knob as with some of the earlier action figures. He is also wearing some protection over his left ankle. As with the Chien-Ming Wang and Jorge Posada 2 figures that came out in the first two MLB series released this year, Jeter's Yankee uniform has the patch on the left sleeve for the final year of Yankee Stadium and the patch on the right sleeve for the 2008 All-Star game they are playing next Tuesday. There is miniscule articulation (you can move the head slightly and can spin the bat barrel to your heart's content). The figure is attached to the base by two pins from the left heel and the right toe. The variant of this figure turns out not to be Jeter in the Yankees grey road uniform, but rather a "clean" figure without any dirt on it (I would love to sit in at a meeting where they debate how much dirt to put on these figures). The only real weakness of the figure is that the face does not look like Derek Jeter, but that is almost always the case with these figures. There is a touch of Jeter's features to be found, but that is it. Fortunately, that has never been the selling point of McFarlane's figures. Yes, this is indeed the fourth Derek Jeter figure. The first came out in back in 2002 in MLB Series 2 and showed Jeter throwing a ball from his knees. The second was two years late in MLB Series 10 and had Jeter having just dropped his bat while leaving the batter's box. The third Jeter figure also came out in 2004 and was originally part of the the Deter Jeter / Nomar Garciapara Action Figure Set, which had Nomar doing the wicked hard slide into second while Jeter was suspended in the air over the bag having just fired the ball to first to try and complete a double play. Jeter was in the Yankees road uniform, showing up in pinstripes with the McFarlane Sportspicks: MLB Series 14: New York Yankees Action Figure Set that also updated Jason Giambi and Bobby Abreu in pinstripes (it took a while for McFarlane to get the Yankees pinstripes right, but if you compare any of the recent Bronx bombers to the what they had a few years ago with the like of Yogi Berra and Reggie Jackson, and you can see what everything is coming up pinstripes these days). There is a fifth Jeter figure coming out this summer with a special Fanfest figure (basically they put a new Jeter figure holding up his helmet to acknowledge the cheers of the faithful at Yankee Stadium using the same base as last year's Johnny Damon figure). Series 22 includes both New York shortstops with Jose Reyes of the Mets getting his first McFarlane figure, as does slugging outfielder Carlos Lee of the Houston Astros. Getting his second figure is Andruw Jones, current on the disabled list for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and third figures for both Curt Shilling of the Boston Red Sox (also on the DL) and Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners. Seeing as how Posada just got off the DL and Wang is currently on it, I have to hope the Great McFarlane DL Curse of 2008 does not strike Jeter too. ![]() New York Yankees- Derek Jeter Entertainment Poster Print, 22x34 $9.00 AllPosters.com is the world's #1 seller of posters, prints, photographs, specialty products and framed art.
