They were cheaper, but I thought it was worth it to spend the money this time. This thing looks like it's going to last for the long haul...built well and the quality is wonderful. I like the long battery life--my old DVD player only lasted 30 minutes--not nearly long enough to entertain a toddler on a flight. Found this and highly rated so gave it a chance. It is what it is - a cheap and easy DVD player that works great  Sony DVP-NS710H/B 1080p Upscaling DVD Player, Black $69.99 I am an amateur when it comes to technical features in a dvd player. I just need a decent picture and a simple remote. The dvd player worked really well, but I was disappointed by the remote control. The worst was that this and all the new SONY dvd player models I subsequently looked at does not allow you use the remote to open and close the dvd holder. The model which my daughter bought a year ago had this feature. For some reason, this is a feature my husband and I use a lot. Also, I use the display feature on the remote to figure out how many minutes each episode or feature lasts. I could not figure out the data on that button. The product itself was fine, but the remote control no longer has the features I use. These features may not be important to other buyers, but they are to me.
