The directory is planned for those interested in business and industry as well as for librarians, not only as a tool for reference but also as an aid in the selection of titles for purchase. The list does not aim to be exhaustive. No attempt at evaluation has been made, but the 8,200 titles represent the periodicals published in the United States and foreign countries, especially in England, France and Germany, which have been found most useful in American collec tions. Occasionally titles which seem to have limited or ephemeral value are listed, their inclusion being justified by their specialized in terest. Monographs and many proceedings and transactions are omitted. Only such titles as appear at regular or stated periods of less than a year are considered. The arrangement is alphabetical by subject. The periodicals are grouped according to a broad classification under which minor subjects are brought out in italics. The entries include full title, date of origin, frequency, size, price, publisher, place and indication of supplements. The price, whenever possible, is given in the currency of the country wherein the periodical is published. Indexing services are indicated by abbreviations. In the second edition an additional group of such services is included, namely Annual Magazine Subject Index, Book Review Digest, Chemical Abstracts, Dramatic Index, Index to Labor Periodicals, Internationale Bibliog raphic der Zeitschriften Literatur, Abteilung A and B, and Subject Index to Periodicals British. The general characteristics of various periodicals are also indicated by abbreviations and this detail of the book is expanded. Bibliographic compilations in the second edition are entered under each subject following the list of current periodicals. This is the most outstanding change in arrangement made by the editor in this section. The compilation of the bibliographies was made by Miss Adelaide C. Cutter, Periodicals Division, New York Public Library and regarding their scope and arrangement Miss Cutter is quoted The purpose of the bibliography has been to group together for each subject as much assistance as possible in the use of the current periodicals listed in any given subject. In other words 1 any important lists that would augment the present list were included, 2 any indexes that would be a key to the material in the periodicals listed, 3 any handbooks or articles that would explain the use or value of the periodicals and 4 any sources for keeping the present list up-to-date. An endeavor to include all current material of this nature was made. Single works or material that had ceased publication were selected and for each subject different criteria of selection were used. For example old material would be of more use in philology than it would be in advertising. Furthermore for some subjects vi THE PERIODICALS DIRECTORY no such aids exist, for others only a few poor ones, and for still others an endless amount. Thus the selection was influenced by whatever material was available as well as by the nature of the sub ject itself. A bibliography of this sort to be complete would require many volumes, and outside of the bases of selection for individual sub jects the overlying rule has been to keep the practical, everyday needs of a general nature in mind rather than the fine distinctions and completeness necessary to advanced research The editor is greatly indebted to the administration of the New York Public Library for permission to use material and records from the various divisions to Mr. Daniel C... |
