In this compellingly argued and deeply personal book, respected sports historian Michael Oriard--who was himself a former second-team All-American at Notre Dame--explores a wide range of trends that have changed the face of big-time college football and transformed the role of the student-athlete.

Oriard considers such issues as the politicization of football in the 1960s and the implications of the integration of college football. The heart of the book examines a handful of decisions by the NCAA in the early seventies--to make freshmen eligible to play, to lower admission standards, and, most critically, to replace four-year athletic scholarships with one-year renewable scholarships--that helped transform student-athletes into athlete-students and turned the college game into a virtual farm league for professional football.

I love the idea of a DVD set covering the history of college football. The topics were right on, impressive video. Unfortunately, the bias was obvious, especially toward Notre Dame. Certainly Notre Dame has played an important part in the history of college football, especially during the earlier days this set seemed to emphasize. But this production greatly over did it. I could give several examples, but I'll give just one. There was a chapter titled "Victory", presumably about big victories of some sort. Of the seven games/victories covered throughout the history of college football, three included Notre Dame. And one of those was a tie. If the writers had tried, I'm sure they could have come up with more appropriate games. On the other hand, I'm sure they knew exactly what they were doing; the purpose is to make money and nothing sells like Notre Dame. Bottom line, if you're a college football fan in the east or midwest, especially a fan of Notre Dame, or a fan of the earlier days, you'll love this set. Other than the bias, it was very well done. I wish someone would do the same thing, including the history of college football as played in the other parts of the country.
