Cat Power
 The Greatest $13.98 I heard that Cat Power was the great new female vocalist and songwriter.. so I downloaded this album. My expectations were high because I knew she couldn't be as good as Carrie Underwood. I was so disappointed! This was garbage! Her voice is annoying and manly, the songs and slow and boring, there aren't any MTV music videos and there aren't any lyrics about love and friends.. what gives? Listen to Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Avril Lavigne or Ashlee Simpson instead.  The Covers Record $11.98 This is my first experience with Cat Power, and I must say it was a pleasure to listen to something so original, even when it wasn't original material. Chan has taken a fairly disparate collection of songs and created a very unique interpretation of other people's music, forming a surprisingly cohesive whole. She goes far beyond simply putting her own stamp on these covers; she recreates them, giving them an entirely new emotional depth in some instances. Her vocal style really captures an inner melancholy and perhaps a kind of longing without sounding contrived (at least, that's what I got out of it). Her "minimalist" style, as some call it, is only minimalist in that it is subtle and not overpowering. I really enjoy her whispery, slightly raspy vocal quality. Obviously instrumentalism isn't a priority in this album, which some reviewers seem to be cranky about. But it didn't bother me at all. The sparse guitar and piano is simply meant as an unobtrusive backdrop to her singing. Some of the tracks are stronger than others, but all are worth listening to. "I Found a Reason" is particularly touching and uplifting. Her rendition of "Wild Is The Wind" is also very moving. Music snobs may not like Cat Power, but I consider myself somewhat of a connoisseur (I enjoy everything from classical to heavy metal, electronica to folk), and this album was a delight.
