There are also chapters devoted to the evaluation of patients for non-cardiac surgery, and the appropriate evaluation of common symptoms (like palpitations, chest pain, etc). I'd recommend this text to provider students and providers alike. ![]() Mayo Clinic Cardiology: Concise Textbook, Third Edition $169.95 I am using this book as a review for CV Boards, which is why I think most people buy this book and what is was originally intended for. First the negative. This book is an easy read, you can usually get through a chapter (~ 10 pages) in 1/2 hour - 45 minutes with decent retention. Problem is there are 126 Chapters!! The time input is not necessarily the issue though, the main issue is that there seems to be a lot of "fat" in the book which needs to be trimmed. There is a lot in here which could have been done without, such as genetic, pathophysiologic, and pharmacologic minutiae which appears superfluous for board review. I think another reviewer put it best with the red pen remark. I realize that Mayo is trying to develop this IP into something of a review-cum-textbook, but I think this schizophrenic approach hampers rather than helps its overall usefulness. Most people either want a review or a reference textbook, but not something in-between. Finally, I think the organization of the book could use a little work. This may be a result of multiple authors which contributes to a sometimes inconsistent style from chapter to chapter--again, the need for better editing. Some chapters seem to place more emphasis on CV Board review than others--a feature made more obvious by the omission of the very useful "CV Board Points" in some chapters. On the flip side, this book is well-written and, as mentioned above, easy to read. There are beautiful images--both color and non. The ECGs are well-depicted and references appropriately from the text within chapters. The section on ECG review is very useful. Overall, as a CV review this is now an "OK" source. I would recommend it with only minor reservation as depicted above. ![]() Clinical Cardiology Made Ridiculously Simple (Edition 3 - 2009) $35.95 The product description states that this book works for nurses and other health care professionals other than MDs. I have been a nurse for 5 years, and I have difficulty following this book. Definitely not "ridiculously simple." |
