The Adventures of Celeste the Cat: Celeste and the Giant Hamster

When we got our pet capybara, Caplin Rous, this book served as a valuable guide for how to take care of a pet capybara. In many ways Caplin is very much like Capyboppy and in other ways he is quite different. It was hilarious when Caplin did something where he looked like one of the wonderful illustrations of Capyboppy in this book. We got him an inner tube just so we could see him sit in it. Turns out he loves that inner tube but we keep it in his pool.

Clearly this is the best book available on the biology of capybaras but it is still a disappointment. As the owner of a pet capybara, Caplin Rous ([...]), I had hoped to learn much more from this book than I did. Very little of the book is actually natural history, much of it is devoted to ranching capybaras, which is probably important to their survival as a species but is not natural history. The 10-year population study was done on a ranch where they capybaras are heavily exploited, again giving little insight into their survival rates under more natural conditions. And the book is heavy on tables and shy on analysis, often repeating itself. At 159 pages, it's too thin for that.

Still, it is the only thing out there which also makes it the best thing out there. However, if you do not have a background in the biological sciences, I would not recommend this book.

If you want to learn about capybaras and aren't interested in the actual data charts, you can try my book The Adventures of Celeste the Cat: Celeste and the Giant Hamster. It's a children's novel but it covers much of the natural history of capybaras and in a more entertaining format.
