![]() Comfort Eagle $8.99 I suppose this review could apply to any of Cake's recordings, because, if there's one thing McCrea and company does well, it's maintain a creative consistenty throughout all of the records they have produced over the years. The overall sound of the band doesn't change all that much, either, but why mess with a good thing? Who could have applied horns, polyrhythm, and counterpoint so effectively but this unique upstart from Sacramento? If I had to point to one aspect of McCrea's writing that I particularly like, it would be the overall narrative. When he isn't pointing fingers or rooting out hypocrisy, hMcCrea weaves some of the most compelling tales about people other than himself. Opera Singer, Rick James, Commisioning a Symchony in C, and I Bombed Korea, to name but a few, are just the tips of the storytelling iceberg for McCrea, and something tells me he isn't through by a long shot. Hey, John, it's 2009. How about another album? ![]() The Cake Bible $35.00 This book is the final word on cakes. If you want to make delicious, well-textured cakes, this is the only guide necessary. I've made several of it's recipes including two multi-tier wedding cakes. My most recent wedding cake was roundly praised by guests as "the best I've ever had!" Let me add that, for this amateur cake maker, cake making is not easy. When things have gone wrong (and occasionally they have!) it's tempting blame the book, but I've ultimately had to concede an error or two on my part. There's an inherent difficulty in good cake making, and Rose Berenbaum has given us a clear, precise and carefully crafted gem of a book with which to rise to the challenge. Can't wait to find out what more Rose has to offer in her new book, Rose's Heavenly Cakes. ![]() Fashion Nugget $8.99 Solid album. Its got some great songs on it, in fact is pretty much all great songs. For a Cake fan this is a must own. For someone who is not a Cake fan, well, buy it anyway, this will make you one. ![]() Rose's Heavenly Cakes $39.95 Cleary written, but detailed. Very good receipes so fair (I have made three). This is a book for perfectionists. It is not a beginners book or an advance book. It is clearly written but it is somewhat detailed. |
