 Brasil! Lingua E Cultura $64.95 This third edition of Brasil! is a huge improvement over past editions. It is very colorful and useful as a textbook. Compared to other textbooks in the university store, the price is extremely reasonable.  Brasil $8.96 Everything that Manhattan Transfer does, they do extremely well. Brasil is no exception. An album recorded in the 80s; it has an unmistakeably 80s tone to it, the percussion tracks in particular. This is not a bossa nova album, but a synthesis of the magnficent vocal harmonies of ManTran with Brazilian musical styles and tones. Overall, not one of their best albums in terms of music selection, but there are some very good numbers, including So You Say, featuring soaring vocals by Ms. Bentyne. Manhattan Transfer's best work is in the genre of Swing Era Jazz and R&B, so for the purist this is not the pinacle of what they can do.  Moro No Brasil $19.98 The Finnish director Mika Kaurismaki has made a wonderful documentary on the roots of Brazilian music. He begins with the Fulni-O Indians and ends up with the samba in Rio. The focus of the film is on the three roots of Brazilian music which are Indian, Portuguese, and African. Kaurismaki drives in his jeep through the Northeastern part of Brazil, then to Bahia, and on to Rio de Janiero and you are given a glimpse of life in these diverse areas of Brazil. The film enables anyone to see the rich soulful mixes of the people of Brazil and their music. For me it is a treasure as I share Kaurismaki's passion for the soulful, happy, makes you want to dance, music of Brazil.  Graffiti Brasil (Street Graphics / Street Art) $22.50 This is the normal story behind people who dont know graffiti in brasil writing a book about it! In this book you can see some of the most famous artists from so paulo and almost nothing on other states. Very nice pictures, but that is not credit to the author who didn't take them!! Good book for OsGemeos lovers though!! |
