![]() Bernadette Peters Loves Rodgers & Hammerstein $17.98 If someone had played this album and asked me who was singing, I doubt that I could have identified the artist correctly. Gone is the "kewpie-doll" sound that is typical of Bernadette Peters; and it plays very well. I do not understand other reviewers who rate a recording low, because the songs have been recorded before. Always, a fresh interpretation helps to appreciate the music--if it is worthy of being recorded again, and Rodgers & Hammerstein certainly is. This album features some of the R & H classics, like "If I Loved You" (in my opinion, the best track on the album, and one of the best recordings of this tune) and "Out of My Dreams," as well as come less familiar, like "So Far," a really under-appreciated piece from "Allegro," and "Something Good." Jonathan Tunic's orchestrations consistently support and supplement the voice, but never intrude. The only misstep is "The Gentleman Is a Dope," which comes across angry, instead of hurt, as Lisa Kirk sang it in the musical. If you want the "kewpie-doll" Peters, you will probably not like this recording. If you enjoy new and thoughtful interpretations of familiar tunes, this one is for you. ![]() Sondheim Etc. Etc.: Bernadette Peters Live at Carnegie Hall (The Rest of It) $18.98 There is far too little Sondheim and far too much over amplified applause. I wish I had listened before I purchased. Even the good song selections are hampered by the tedious applause. ![]() Into the Woods $24.98 Love those good old stories that have been a part of your life since childhood? Cinderella, Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk? Sondheim cleverly and successfully blends several classic fairy tales into one seamless, hilarious story. Spectacular performances by the cast of this live theatre production are supported by an excellent and appropriate score, impressive costumes and great sets. This DVD captures the performance very well, and is a delightful addition to your DVD collection, whether you enjoy classic stories, live theatre, musicals, stage craft, or just plain quirky fun. Highly recommended. |
