"Addicted" is quasi-punk rock from the quasi-punk rockers Saving Abel. At best, they can hope to be one-hit wonders with this song. The front man sings about sex with his girlfriend, about the noises she makes "between the sheets." Surprisingly, this song speaks of "making love"--quite unexpected in an otherwise vulgar song. It's a song about sex that's quite unsexy. If you want to promote abstinence-only education, this song would work wonders.

I guess you could say that I have two reviews for this album - the first being the more superficial review of songs, sounds, voices, etc. The second more about the substance of the album.

To start with, I have not heard anything by Devin in his solo career that I have not liked and this is no exception. In some ways, this album is even a dream come true because he goes for some extremes that I enjoy as well. The sound of this album is heavy and the only album that I can definitely say is consistently heavier would be Physicist. This album does not have the speed of Physicist, however. What it does have is the dream vocal combination of Devin and Anneke (formerly of The Gathering). I will not say that she is the perfect vocalist, but she is perfect for my tastes. She sings powerfully, skillfully and confidently without showing off. She is not some soprano or R&B wannabe. She is simply an amazing rock singer. Listening to her sing Hyperdrive is simply a gift from heaven. He backing vocals in the title track add some wonderful texture against Devin's angry vocals.
Another song that I simply love is Bend It Like Bender. When I first heard it, I found it incredibly catchy in a strangely non-metal way that I could not put my finger on. I read somewhere where Devin made the comparison to Abba for Anneke's vocals here, which blew me away because THAT is where I heard it. Devin seems to have some of the same non-metal infatuations as I do (e.g. Abba and Enya).
I could on and on about more songs like Supercrush (great on so many levels), and other but I think you get the idea.

The second part of my review is more the FEELING of this album, in addition to Ki and some of Devin's other solo stuff (should you not be familiar with it).
Without getting too deep, I feel like my soul has been broken over the years. Devin has this way of evoking emotions that I generally do not want to feel. Whether that is good or bad is a separate story, but the point is that he has the ability to do this. I get the impression that the whole Devin Townsend Project is written from a place that I am in as well, but unable to express in a musical way. Maybe that is natural for people our age (Devin is only a couple months older than me, I think).

I will grant that Devin is not for everybody, and you either GET him or you do not. If you are one of the former, I cannot recommend this enough. Some people may say that this is more commercial sounding, and I would argue that there are more pop influences here. However, I cannot imagine this music being considered radio friendly. It is more a fun, singable, enjoyable Devin rock album. I cannot WAIT for him to come around on a headlining tour. If Anneke was to tour with him, I'd probably have to quit my job to follow the tour!
