The long and eventful RAF career of Air Commodore Edward Mortlock 'Teddy' Donaldson, CB, CBE, DSO AFC & Bar and (U.S.) Legion of Merit, is the subject of this volume by author Nick Thomas. Published by Pen & Sword Books in 2008, RAF TOP GUN chronicles the many achievements and contributions made by the diminuitive Englishman in the course of 30 years of service to King and country. Donaldson was quite a character and his story is well-told in RAF TOP GUN.

Born in Malaysia, Donaldson joined the RAF in 1931. He soon proved an exceptional pilot and aerial marksman, subsequently leading the RAF's aerobatic team and twice winning the RAF's gunnery trophy. When war broke out, Donaldson was commanding 151 Squadron, leading the unit through the Battle of France and the Battle of Britain. A tough but popular skipper, Donaldson led from the front, downing 10 1/2 German aircraft. After spending a year as an instructor, Donaldson was sent to America to evaluate and improve USAF gunnery techniques and coursework, his efforts resulting in the award of a Legion of Merit. Postwar he led a special RAF effort to capture the official air speed record, Donaldson becoming the fastest man alive on 7 September 1946. Further commands of increasing importance followed before Donaldson retired from the RAF in 1961 to become an Air Correspondent for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH. He died in 1992.

With his ever-present grin, infectious laugh and a handlebar moustache almost as long as a Hurricane's wingspan, Donaldson cut quite a figure. Yet behind the 'jolly good' facade was a top professional known as a first-rate shot, aerial tactician and tough but inspirational commander. Thanks to widespread access to Donaldson's family, relatives and friends, author Thomas does a wonderful job of bringing this complex man to life, warts and all.

Teddy Donaldson isn't widely known as say, Johnny Johnson, Douglas Bader or Sailor Malan but, as documented in RAF TOP GUN, he certainly made great contributions to the ultimate victory. Air combat enthusiasts will want to pick up a copy of this book and savor the life and times of a man, who the author maintains, "lived as he flew - at full throttle." Recommended.
