This is part of ESX Entertainment's Motown Legends series. Motown may have been founded and run by Berry Gordy, but Smokey Robinson's multi-faceted talents as a producer, performer and composer solidified the label's base in establishing it as a major force in music. With his creamy high tenor and lush arrangements, Robinson's strengths as a crooner shine on MOTOWN LEGENDS: THE BALLAD ALBUM. It's no accident that modern-day radio appropriated the title from Robinson's mid-'70s classic "Quiet Storm" to coin a term for a format intended for romantic interludes. Other classic ballads on this collection are "Ooo Baby Baby" (a hit for Linda Ronstadt in 1979), "Cruisin'" and "Tracks Of My Tears." And while many covered his songs, Smokey Robinson wasn't against returning the favor; particularly the Chi-Lites' "Oh Girl," which he infused with a funkier swagger without diluting the pleading sentiment. Smokey Robinson's lasting flair for crafting odes d'amour can still be heard all over the airwaves, in the sounds of Babyface, Boyz II Men and other like-minded artists.

The last part of this conversation had to do with the question of separation of Church and State. Willis maintains this is the one great political innovation the U.S. Constitution gave to the world. He then goes on to suggest that the only way to fight the War on Terror is to take action against those who commit the terror acts. And when Charlie Rose asks about incitement in mosques Willis says somewhat irresponsibly that this is no one's business. Willis also goes on to claim that the U.S. action to depose Saddam Hussein was done for religious reasons. This is absurd. The Baathist regime in Iraq was a secular one, and clearly what the U.S. went after was a brutal dictator who twice had invaded his neighbors and was a threat to explode the entire Middle East.
But the second part of the conversation was a coda merely to the heart of it. This related to Willis new book " What the Gospels Meant" This is the final part of a trilogy on early Christianity. Willis explains the Gospels were written three or four decades after the life of Jesus. They attempted to integrate the experiences and memories of the disciples into the traditional Jewish sources. Willis goes on to talk about the character of each of the Gospels. Willis is clearly a sincere Christian but one who uses the critical scholarship to perhaps upset a bit the views of traditional believers. For instance he raises the question of how many brothers Jesus had, one or a number. He too suggests Jesus was estranged from all of them. In other words he sort out of gives us a feeling , which I suspect many believing Christians would not like to have, that the Gospels are fallible, imperfect, humanly constructed documents.
