 No More Sad Refrains: The Anthology $24.98 Contrary to the title,this doom & gloom CD is not exactly bursting with happiness - just one look at Denny's depressed (hangover?) face on the cover and you know what you are getting yourself into. Danny is highly respected con of british folk-rock and she did some really great work as part of Fairport Convention - those songs are highlights on this compilation but sadly,as solo artist she never really experienced same inspiration and thought pretty (in a moody-teenager way) lot of her solo work is simply meandering here and there,neither pop nor art-song,like singer herself wasn't sure does she want to be recognised as an artist or hit maker. At the end,it was neither - though gifted with a lovely voice, Sandy Denny would always be remembered as Farport Convention-girl singer and not as solo act. Hand-picked songs from her small recorded legacy,combined with some rare tracks,duets,outtakes,collaborations and even movie theme are base of this compilation. If she is still around and standing next to me,I would probably tell her to cheer up,relax and have some coffe (and get out in the sun more often) because she sounds like depressed goth teenager. Five stars for her work with Fairport Convention but no stars for her solo work.  London Refrain (Zion Covenant) $12.99 "Truth Through Fiction" seems like an oxymoron but Bodie (the writer) and Brock (the historian) Thoene elevate it to a higher level. The history and circumstances are accurate. The fictional characters become friends and heroes, with a bit of "supernatural" to boot. I was so impressed with this series that I have bought all of their books that I can find and I have yet to be disappointed. |
