![]() I Love Rock N' Roll $0.99 If you've ever doubted whether Joan Jett loves rock n' roll, this song will erase that doubt. She loves it. A lot. ![]() Prey For Rock & Roll $2.99 This movie is a below average movie. You can tell that the budget was limited for this movie. Don't get me wrong, Gina Gershon does a good acting job, but some of the others actors just don't pull it off. The best thing about this movie is that it shows how unglamorous being in a band can be, and what hard work it is. It's too bad that this movie had such a limited budget. Gina does an OK job in singing, but the movie is titled incorrectly. The band that this is about is a punk band, not a rock & roll band. So, the title is very misleading. Punk and Rock & Roll are not the same genre, so it should have been titled "Prey for Punk". Gina is a good singer when she sings slower melodies, but she doesn't know how to sing punk or rock & roll. She is incredibly attractive though. So, if you just want to see her looking hot, then buy this. If you want a good quality film, skip this one. ![]() Philips Rock-n-Roll Speaker Dock for iPhone/iPod $119.99 With an eventual upgrade to an iPod touch in mind, I decided to try this dock. It is supposed to allow you to play the iPod sideways so you can watch video in full screen, as well as in the regular up & down position for music and for other iPod models. It sounded pretty versatile in the description. As it turns out, the concept is good, but the execution is quite poor. Whoever invents an adapter for docks that will play Touches and Nanos sideways on existing docks will be much more successful than this limited product. The dock industry seems to hold an utter disdain for owners of iPod Classics. I'm sure it's because everyone is moving to Touches and Nanos, but they haven't made any of the newer ones with enough storage space for me yet, so I haven't upgraded. I rarely find a dock with an adapter tray that will hold a Classic, and this one is no different. I can use the Classic without the tray, but there's nothing there to support it. So if you have a Classic, skip this dock. In fact, you'll have to search high and low for a dock that will hold a Classic without putting strain on it, so it's not a flaw unique to this model. However, even if I had a Touch or a Nano, I would be leery of purchasing this. You can turn it sideways, and it has adapters for Touches and Nanos, though you may still have a stability problem depending on which generation you have. I've seen cheap, no-name docks handle the adjustment and stability issues better than this. There are only three buttons--power, volume and bass, no remote and no additional functionality such as alarm clock and so forth. Other docks in this class offer a lot more functionality, remotes and stability-- they simply offer a lot more value. The stand in the back flips out and stays in one position, making it easy to roll from one side to the other--too easy, in my opinion. If I could twist the stand into a position to keep it one way or another I would feel much better about leaving my expensive player on it. As it is, I'm afraid it will roll off the shelf. This is good for watching videos in your lap or on the floor, and for listening to music in an upright position. I don't see the portability considering the bulk of the dock itself, the instability of the grip on most iPods, and the company admonitions against exposing the dock to sunlight, sand, and so on. I am no audiophile, having a slight hearing loss and have never been one to demand theatre quality sound from any device I own. I am not a sound junkie, but I have to say that the sound on this dock is sub-par compared to almost every other dock I own. I have a cheap GPX dock I bought two years ago to keep in the bathroom, and the sound is only slightly better than that. The sound on the Sony Speaker Dock I recently purchased with its tiny speakers is better than this, and it has an 7 inch screen on which I can watch my movies. Philips has been an electronics name I have trusted since I was a kid, and I was stunned that this product is so inferior. Don't let this one review on this one item keep you from considering other Philips products. However, I cannot give this dock any more than one star, and recommend you keep searching for a dock with more features, better sound and more stability--better docks are out there. ![]() Fall to Pieces: A Memoir of Drugs, Rock 'n' Roll, and Mental Illness $25.99 I read Mary Weiland's book and was surprised that, during all that time of the famous drug episodes with the guy from STP, there was this amazing girl who was also there... and this is her story. I was really moved, and I laughed and cried with Mary as she learned what her addictions were doing to her and her world and her family and her life. The fact that she survived with such depth and such a great sense of humor is remarkable. I want to read the book again right now and get lost in her world again. It's such a wonderful book. |
